Put more money in Maths research, don tells FG

PROFESSOR of mathematics at the department of mathematics, Covenant college, Ota, Ogun state, Samuel Iyase, has advised  the Federal government to inject greater money into mathematical research to bridge the technological hole between Nigeria and developed countries.

Iyase who delivered the institution’s 14th Inaugural Lecture defined mathematics as a catalyst for attaining technological development and lowering the scientific and technological gap that exist between the developed nations and Nigeria. 

Talking on the theme “mathematics: A Platform For Leapfrogging into scientific And Technological development”, posited that mathematics education is the riding force for scientific and technological advancement. In his appeal to the authorities, he stressed the need for the Federal authorities to make investments vastly in technological researches that allows you to reap sustainable monetary development. in line with him, the underneath-improvement of Nigeria and different African countries in technology and technology was to a degree, traceable to the low degree of development in mathematical and scientific studies, noting “most advanced nations committed a enormous part of their budget to training especially for mathematical studies.” at the same time as maintaining  the need for Federal government to allocate greater budget for the educational quarter, he defined that funds supplied with the aid of government agencies like Petroleum trust Fund, PTDF, were not adequate for mathematical research. The don advised that to boost mathematics studies, the Federal government need to compel multinational businesses to reserve a percent in their income to assist studies in mathematics and the fundamental sciences. He averred that to leap-frog the country to scientific and technological advancement, there was the need to form a think-tank of pinnacle degree mathematical specialists to provide advice on the home utility and use of mathematical tools in fixing issues in government, business and industry. earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Aaron Atayero, said that the inaugural lecture was well timed to proffer solutions to some if the country’s demanding situations. Atayero, represented by Prof. Shalom Chinedu, the deputy vice-chancellor, noted that the academic environment existed permanent to promote inquired and advance to a few human knowledge.
